 Waste and Recycling Information

The Solid Waste & Recycling Division provides solid waste collection within the corporate city limits. The division provides daily service in different areas of the city. In addition to these services, they also assist with waste collection at special events such as special neighborhood clean-ups. This Division collects garbage, trash and recyclables throughout the year except for city recognized holidays. Service to affected areas is made up on alternate days.

 

Yard Waste

 

No yard waste in bags!

 

Instead of curbside debris (brush and yard trimmings) being picked up on the same day as your garbage, it will be picked up the next business day after your garbage. NOTE: you still need to place everything out the same day that garbage is picked up.

 

Public Works has a high tech way of locating, marking and categorizing standard piles of residential curbside debris left out for pickup. The system lets the sanitation truck drivers electronically mark debris you leave out  for pickup on the day they pick up your garbage. Later that day, locations are sent to a mapping system that allows the debris crew to drive directly to the piles of debris marked. The debris crews will use these maps the following business day (if possible) to pick up your curbside debris in a much more efficient manner. This system will dramatically decrease the miles that the debris crew will have to cover in a month and will save tax dollars in a number of ways.

RECYCLING SERVICE

 

Due to limited space curbside trucks can only pick up the following items:

 

  • Tin/Steel cans, tin plated, food and beverage containers, all sizes; paper labels are accepted.

  • Aluminum used beverage containers and foil clean of food.

  • Plastic bottles-blow molded (bottle necked) HDPE, PET and other plastic bottles and jugs including plastic milk jugs, water jugs, detergent bottles, soda bottles, dishwashing soap bottles.  Caps and labels are acceptable.  Numbers 1 thru 7 are acceptable. 

  • Old newspapers and their inserts.

  • Old magazines, including catalogues, mailers, and phone books.

  • Beverage cartons-must be flattened.  Small cardboard boxes (space is limited).

  • Brown paper bags.  These can be used to put all your newspapers in. 

  • Junk mail-all dry, loose bulk mail.  Envelopes with windows are acceptable.

  • Copier paper, notebook paper (no backings) and computer paper (continuous form perforated paper).

  • Boxboard-dry food and cereal boxes, shoe boxes (all must be flattened). 

 

Items not acceptable

 

  • Motor oil, anti-freeze or any chemical containers  

  • Styrofoam

  • Tubs, pots and trays (plant trays)

  • Shredded paper

  • Plastic grocery  bags

  • Boxboard with wax or plastic coating or boxboard that has been contaminated by food (pizza boxes).

  • Glass (Can be taken to Pickens Co. Recycle Centers separated by color).
